Directly from Maui, Hawaii, Qualcomm unveiled the next generation of its flagship mobile platform at Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019. The company has made the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 official, the processor that will give life to the high-end of the next year 2020, including phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S11 or Xiaomi Mi 10, and that I am terrified we will begin to see in the first phones inside of little more than a month.
The arrival of this platform is no surprise. Qualcomm had already announced that its new processor was on the way. Like every year, the company has taken the opportunity provided by this Summit to make official the new installment of the Snapdragon 800 series, which in this edition comes with even more cutting-edge specifications. And prepared to shelter the new technologies and networks that await us from 2020. In addition, it arrives very well, accompanied by two other processors and a new generation of on-screen fingerprint readers.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, all the information
Qualcomm ensures that this new generation is one of the greatest advances that we have seen so far in the Snapdragon family. We are talking about a processor oriented to the highest range of smartphones, which introduces a new generation of the X55 modem in charge of providing devices with compatibility with 5G networks that, curiously, will not be embedded in the SoC itself but will have to be integrated separately.
However, Qualcomm has secured to The Verge that this processor is provided solely to give life to mobile 5G so that manufacturers are obliged to enter the modem X55 in its terminals based on this platform-
Among other details, it is specified that this new generation represents an advance in terms of graphic performance of 25% compared to the Snapdragon 855. In addition, as expected, we are facing a chip manufactured in the 7-nanometer TSMC FinFET process, just like its predecessor. In addition, it has a DSP Hexagon 698 capable of generating a calculation power four times greater than in the previous model while improving energy savings by 55%.
During the conference, Qualcomm has also specified that this processor has the fifth generation of the Qualcomm AI Engine, capable of processing 2 Gigapixels per second thanks to its 3 MB of cache memory and support for LPDDR5 RAM at 2750 MHz RAM… Also, 8K video recording is allowed, and support is included for single photographic sensors with up to 200 megapixels resolution – without Zero Shutter Lag -, or dual 64 megapixels each.
The company has invited some partners to the event, who have confirmed the launch of new smartphones based on this platform. They have been OPPO, Xiaomi, which for the first time confirms the name Mi 10, Motorola, and ZTE, which has made official the arrival of a model from the Axon series for the first half of next year.

New Snapdragon 765 and 765G: 5G for everyone
In addition to the new Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm unveils a new member of the 700 series, the Snapdragon 765, along with a gaming-focused variant called the Snapdragon 765F. This processor brings 5G connectivity to a wider audience since the objective of this processor is to develop more affordable smartphones than those based on the Snapdragon 865 platform.
Interestingly, unlike the Snapdragon 865, this Snapdragon 765 will have 5G integrated, so from next year, we will likely begin to see the first affordable mid-range and high-end smartphones equipped with 5G connectivity.
For their part, these processors are capable of capturing 4K HDR video and supporting photographic sensors made up of a 192-megapixel sensor without ZSL. Also included is the fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine.
Regarding the devices that will arrive with this platform, we know that Nokia will be one of the first brands to introduce a mobile phone with this chip inside it. However, Xiaomi will be ahead of the Finnish with its new Redmi K30, probably the first smartphone with Snapdragon 765G.

3D Sonic Max: the ultrasonic fingerprint reader of the future
But not only processors live Qualcomm. The Californian also announced a new generation of its ultrasound-based fingerprint reader module, which it calls 3D Sonic Max. It is an evolution of the 3D Sonic Sensor announced last year, a model integrated into devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 or Samsung Galaxy S10, which has been quite disappointing in terms of speed and precision, especially when compared to optical readers. Of other models.
This improved version, according to Qualcomm, has a fingerprint detection area 17 times larger than in the case of the previous model, which allows, among other things, that it is possible to authenticate using two fingerprints at the same time. In addition, the unlocking speed should be substantially improved since it will now be easier to locate the exact position in which the finger must be placed to unlock the phone.
Another improvement of this new generation of ultrasonic fingerprint readers will be found in the fingerprint registration process. And is that according to Qualcomm, now it will be enough with a single touch on the reader to register all the unique features of the fingerprint, instead of having to press several times or slide the finger on the screen.
