Nintendo announced the Expansion Pass for ‘ Xenoblade Chronicles 2 ‘, it promised content until October 2018. A year later, it has become clear that both the Big N and Monolith will fulfill their promise, with ‘ Torna – The Golden Country ‘ being the pinnacle of the adventure. But what exactly is it?
‘Torna – The Golden Country’ development began in parallel to ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’. However, Tetsuya Takahashi (CEO of Monolith Soft) admitted having kept it in a drawer to fulfill the objectives of the sequel.
It all started three years ago. ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ was part of our original prototype for the main game. To be more exact, it could be said that it was one of the plots we considered for our initial prototype.
After considering several factors, we realized that including ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ in the main game would have sacrificed a considerable part of the budget and development period we had set for ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’.
Subsequently, Torna – The Golden Country remained on my computer’s hard drive, but when we decided to add a new scenario with the expansion pass, I knew I had to bring Torna – The Golden Country back and tell that story.
In this way, this missing piece of the main game will be recovered as the star content within the Expansion Pass itself. However, it will be possible to get hold of it independently and without having a copy of ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’. How? From the outset, it is a story that takes us back to another era.
The story around ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ focuses on Jin and Lora, the other protagonists of ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’, which means going 500 years before the events of the Switch game and delving into their past.
Something that has two direct consequences: on the one hand, the Titan of Torna – remember that the Xenoblade universe takes place in Titans – will be added as a new map in this content, which means that we will explore regions created for the occasion set 500 years before from ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’, with the capital of Torna as a new map of towns, as well as the surrounding areas.
The second consequence is that, logically, in this period, the Pilots and the Blades still did not fight as in the original story. Due to this, ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ reformulates the battle system of the main game, keeping the essence but giving it new nuances.
And, of course, if there are new areas to explore, we will know a new era and the battles have been adapted to the context; Monolith will use the occasion to expand on the original soundtrack. Nintendo anticipates that the new musical pieces will transmit more mature sensations, according to the fate of the new protagonists.
Three alternatives to launch into this new adventure
This expansion of ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’ will be incredibly unique since it can be purchased individually in addition to being included in the Expansion Pass. However, Nintendo has done its homework very well in this regard.
- On the one hand, those who have already purchased the expansion pass will be able to download ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ without any additional cost from September 14. This expansion is included along with all previously released content and can be purchased from the eShop for about 30 euros.
- On the other hand, we can also get the digital pack ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2 + Expansion Pass’ for 89.98 euros, which is already available, guaranteeing access to ‘Torna – The Golden Country’ from the launch day itself.
- Finally, ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country will be sold in physical form, an edition that includes only the expansion and does not need ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2’ to be enjoyed.
Of course, the exciting thing about this independent physical edition (which we can reserve for about 34.90 ) is that it also contains a download code for the expansion pass of ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2, although, of course, the contents of this pass can only be used if we have the main game.
And what is included in the Expansion Pass? The latest trailer for Nintendo’s YouTube channel is quite illustrative.
With no less than 1.42 million copies sold to date, the final expansion of ‘Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will put the finishing touch on Rex and Pira’s adventure. ‘Torna – The Golden Country,’ as well as its physical and independent edition, will be available from September 14.
