The rumors had been gathering for months and they agreed on something that would be a change of third: more variety in the same batch of Apple mobile phones. And so it has been, seeing that the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are now official and that they accompany the iPhone 12 without this last name, including the new iPhone 12 mini.
These are the most ambitious mobiles from the manufacturer for 2020 and also the largest, at least speaking of the Max that integrates the longest diagonal that we have historically seen in an iPhone. They also come with the latest Apple processor and incorporate compatibility with the 5G network, something we had not seen in Apple phones until this year.

The recovery of a historical design for the house
They are the direct successors of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, although we will see that the design undergoes very notable changes (especially speaking of a brand that is not characterized by radical variations). The angled edges return, iPad Pro style and recovered from the iPhone 5s and earlier, saying goodbye to the semi-sphere curvature.
The materials are still glass for the back and steel for the edges, keeping the physical buttons. We do not see the supposed reduction of the notch, which remains as it has been until now, being quite large compared to what we usually see in the form of a “U”.
Of course, the ceramic layer we have also seen in the iPhone 12 is added, which, according to the brand, gives unprecedented resistance. We will have to see if that is the case, as we will also have to check if this design is still comfortable in the hand.
The same notch and the same refresh rate
We expected to see an increase in the refresh rate of the new iPhones, as we have seen even in mid-range mobiles for a few months. But no, iPhones remain at 60 Hz, although they slightly increase the resolution.
We see 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays for the standard Pro and 6.7-inch for the Max. The resolution is 2,532 x 1,170 pixels and 2,778 x 1,184 pixels, respectively, remaining at about 460 pixels per inch.
A powerful engine that had already been presented to us
As usual, Apple uses the iPhone to release its processor, although being strict this time, we already saw it in the new iPad Air. This is the Apple A14 Bionic, built-in 5 nanometers, but as usual, we do not know the RAM of any of the models. Although the novelty has been emphasized like almost nothing else today: 5G.
We have seen that the minimum storage is 128 GB, and there are also 256 GB and 512 GB versions. There’s no battery data, but we know that these Pro line iPhones also take advantage of the new MagSafe wireless charging feature. This MagSafe allows wireless charging of up to 15 W, while chargers with the Qi standard allow charging of up to 7.5 W. If, on the contrary, a fast charging cable is used, this can be up to 50% in half an hour with an adapter of 20 W or more.
Three rear cameras with LiDAR included
Apple maintains in its top-of-the-range smartphones the system of three rear cameras we already saw last year. These are a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto lens. The only difference between the two models is that the larger one has optical image stabilization by sensor displacement.
In addition to the technical improvements that we have seen in the specifications, the highlight of the cameras this year is in the improvements of night photos and videos. Thanks to the larger aperture of the wide-angle camera (of ƒ/1.6), the system captures more light for clearer and more detailed photos at night. To this, we must add the new LiDAR, which scans the environment to create a more detailed depth map regardless of whether it is night or day. Result? Among others, being able to take pictures in night portrait mode.
Speaking of the Pro Max, the sensor is 47% larger than the previous one (according to Apple) with 1.7μm pixels, which promises an 87% improvement in low-light conditions. In addition, the telephoto lens of the 12 Max has a focal length of 65 millimeters, and the total zoom of the system is 5x, as described by the brand.
Some improvements will come to both iPhone 12 Pro, such as the new ProRAW feature, which combines Apple’s multi-stream processing and computational photography with the RAW file type and its capabilities. This means that users can natively edit color, detail level, and dynamic range on the iPhone or another computer.
The manufacturer also chests out with video and claims that these iPhone 12 Pro are the first devices in the world with end-to-end Dolby Vision and HDR recording with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps. In addition, we see an improved optical stabilization system in the Pro Max.
